What I Ended Up Wearing

Well, I didn’t get anything new for school, but here’s what I ended up wearing:

last day of school outfit 09It’s really quite simple and boring, actually. But, yesterday, I found the pink cami at the bottom of my drawer and tried it on. I got it last March for my birthday from my good friend and wore it a couple times.

I decided that the last day of school shouldn’t be such a big deal considering… well… it’s the last day of school.

I paired the American Eagle camisoule with my denim shorts which I bought when I liked Abercrombie and Fitch. I added a brown tank top under, my gold sandals from Target and a trench coat I got about a year and a half ago which I still love.

Really, I’m not impressed with the outfit, but who cares? It’s… cute.

Have a great summer everyone!

Last Day of School!

Monday, June 22nd is the end of 6th grade for me. I can’t believe how fast the school year has gone! I’m going to miss everyone and I’m actually sort of disappointed that today is the very last day I will see my friends before the summer.

Anyway, I have absolutely no idea what to wear. I’m out of new clothes, and to make it worse, it’s been the worst weather the past month. Rain. Thunder. Humidity. But, it’s hot.

I have no fresh ideas.

At all.

One bit.

I am uninspired and totally clueless.

I was talking to some of my friends yesterday asking what the heck they were wearing. None of them know, neither do they care. I’m just guessing that they will be wearing their typical preppy Abercrombie & Fitch uniform.

But, ahhh, finally, I have found a classy, in style store to buy clothes that will actually fit my tiny little body. And it’s on the way to the shore… where we might be going tomorrow (if the weather doesn’t turn out bad).

I’ve liked J. Crew for a long time, but was never able to fit into their items. I knew they had a children’s line, but little did I know they had my size. Crewcuts! Cute name for a much-needed, small-sized line of kids that will actually fit me.

Therefore, besides my other needs, I will buy something small that will complete an outfit that I already have. A graphic t-shirt:

(Erika/Mom) School’s out for summer……School’s out for ever……

WB8188~Alice-Cooper-Schools-Out-PostersI don’t remember what I wore on last days of school. I just remember some particularly peculiar first day of school oufits–but I’ll save them for another post. I do remember when Candies were all the rage. My best friend Carla wore a pair on the last day of 11th grade, and used them to fend off some hostile girls who were out to get her for some forgotten reason. They were pretty lethal, too, with those long, wooden heels. Debbie Harry from Blondie made them super famous:

Wow, couldn’t find any. Amazing. Here’s a nice updated version, though. If I were still in school, I’d definitely wear these:

My Best Friend’s Wedding

Tum, tum, ta tum...

Tum, tum, ta tum...

(Erika/Mom) After many failed attempts, my matchmaking skills have finally paid off. David Sowell, a cherished friend since junior high, and Diana Markarian, my friend from our Guerneville days in the 70s, met through me, fell in love, and are getting married on July 18! It’s so exciting to see two good friends dazzled by love and excited for the future.

So get this: David has asked me to be his best man. His best woman. His stand-up gal. Whatever it’s called. I’ve been a bridesmaid many, many, many times, but never a best man. It’s kind of fun to think about but of course I’m at a loss as to what to wear. My stylish friend Jes Alexander of the famed Herald de Paris suggested something tailored with tuxedo-like features. I thought that was good advice.

It'd be fun to get the tuxedo feel without actually wearing one.

I’m looking at tuxedo dresses and there are some great ones out there (many of these are previous seasons and have been removed from archives so forgive any dead-end links). Take a look at these:

Macys tuxedo dress; $40.60

This Macy’s dress could be a good look for me and at less than $50 the price is right. However it’s at least a year old. Here’s another one:

It’s shown on for $54.99 but is out of stock. (Is there an irony here?)

This one by Diane von Furstenberg and featured on is too wintery for an outdoor California wedding but I really like its silhouette and tuxedo details.

Love the lapel and drop-down sash on this dress.

I absolutely LOVE this Alexander Wang dress, found on I think it would look good on my figure and the pewter color would blend well with the fuschia and white of the bridesmaids. But at 625 sterling pounds, I’m not even going to bother calculating the conversion to dollars. Way too rich for my wallet.

So the search continues. Lizzi has some great suggestions below.

images(Lizzi/Daughter) Mom has a wedding. It’s a bit casual, but it’s still a wedding, so it’s time to pick out a fabulous dress! THANKS LIZZI; MOM IS GOING TO COMMENT IN CAPS.

What’s really in this season are pleated dresses also known as a bandage dress, escargot dress, or tiered dress. Even better, they are good for slimming your body.

Hervé Léger is well known for his bandage dresses, so I took one of my favorites from and took dresses from that were somewhat inspired by the dress.

herve leger dress redIsabelle Bandage Dress from for $975. I WISH. TRUST ME, I WOULDN’T LOOK SLIM IN THIS.

I thought this dress was gorgeous, but a little bit expensive. Sure, she might be able to wear it to another fancy occasion, but it’s always best to get something similar for an even better price.

purple wedding dressAdriana Papell Tiered Silk Dress from for $188.00. YEAH! LOVE THIS ONE AND CAN LIVE WITH THE PRICE TAG, TOO.

This dress isn’t too similar, but what I like about this is its pleats are more flowing rather than bandage-like. I also like the pleats on the upper area and the belt. This is very elegant and has many spring trends incorporated in it.

First of all, how could you go wrong with BCBGMAXAZRIA? Second of all, it definitely has a touch of Hervé Léger. Also comes in these colors FIRST OF ALL, HOW DO YOU KNOW ALL THESE DESIGNERS SO WELL?? I DO LIKE THE TIERS BUT AM CONCERNED THAT THE SLIM FIT ON A SIZE 8/10 BODY WOULD MAKE ME RESEMBLE A MUMMIFIED SEAL:

Save the best for last! Not only does this have a beautiful fabric, it’s the least expensive out of all three and has gorgeous detail. I love it. Even though it’s similar to the BCBGMAXAZRIA dress, it has bra-friendly straps. Also comes in these colors:

Summer Sandals

Getting ready for sandal season

Getting ready for sandal season

(Lizzi/Daughter) I love summer, mostly because of the bright, light, and fun fashions and styles! One of my favorite summer accessories are… sandals! I love everything from casual flip flops to bold gladiators. Start your summer right with three pairs of must-have sandals.

1. Versatile and Casual
black Havianasblack Havianas 2Black Havianas Flip-Flops from for $18.00

Even the most fashionable people you can think of probably have at least one pair of casual flip-flops. I love Havianas mostly because of their comfort and their many different color choices. What is good about having these flip-flops is they’re easy to take on and off when going to the beach, the pool, shopping, walking around town, and every other fun summer activity you can think of! These flip-flops can be paired with pretty much any casual outfit for the summer, and because of their versatile color, almost any colors can be paired with them.

2. Fun and Stylish

What I like most about these sandals is their ankle wraps. I also like their two different looks. As showed in the first image, it’s a bit taller and would look good with short dresses, skirts, shorts, etc. But, you can shorten them and make the sandals something you would wear with a maxi-dress. It’s good to own a pair of sandals like these so you have something different in your wardrobe and they are a better piece to wear to a party or pretty much anywhere!

3. Fancy-shmancy

flower wedgeSteve Madden “Florah” Sandal from for $89.95

Not only were wedges popular last year… and the year before that, now you have an even BIGGER choice because of how many women love them (and don’t forget girls)! These wedges are simple but oh so chic. Wear them to a fancy dinner, a fancy party, or anywhere fancy. Actually, they don’t even have to be fancy which is nice. Pair them with a simple black romper and you are ready to go for the day!

(Erika/Mom) I must start with a secret confession–I don’t like flip-flops. Never have. The rubbery “thongs” we wore in the 70s gave way to cool Japanese-looking ones that went “slap-slap” no matter how carefully you walked and hurt the inside of your big toe. I use ’em to run outside when I’ve forgotten to put the garbage out, or poolside if I’m too lazy to hunt for sandals. But I’m a sandals girl, through and through.

If you’re ever at the Macys in Quaker Bridge and notice a mother and daughter walking sideways through the shoe section, that’s us. No matter what the errand, we always pause at the shoe racks like drunken butterflies. My newest sandal selection is a happy daisy motif that Lizzi helped me select:

I love straps that are soft and come across more like ribbon or a soft leather belt, like the one on these sandals from Macys:

For my glamour sandal, if money and travel to London was no object, may I present this gorgeous Kurt Geiger design? Replete with gems and a black tie to be worn high or low, this sandal is something I’ll dream about tonight:

Need to cash in my 401(k) for these, but ooohh, aren't they nice?

Here is some advice from someone who doesn’t always heed her own advice: No matter what, make sure you keep up on pedicures. Polished, filed little toenails and smooth skin make even the shabbiest of flip-flops look good.

Hey! You Copied Me!

(Erika/Mom) This morning I had to get tough on my long-shower-loving Lizzi. “C’mon Elizabeth, you’ve been in there way too long…” “Elizabeth I mean it, we’re all waiting to take ours…” etc. Lizzi came out, not very happy, and huffed by me to go to her room.

So I took my shower and went in to the closet to choose something to wear. Weekend attire, casual, comfortable. Ah, my favorite salmon-colored shirt with freshly washed jeans. Maybe layer it…with my peach cami. Perfect. Here’s how it looked:

Weekend attire for me, the mom

I don’t wear this shirt I got from American Eagle too much, so I pulled that out, an old lace camisoule, and my most comfortable jeans. I rolled them up because I was bored and went downstairs. Mom and my outfit didn’t look exactly the same, but had similar elements. A lace cami about the same color, a boyfriend shirt, and mid-wash jeans.

So, we’re not quite sure who copied who… but we thought it was funny how similar our outfits were without even communicating!

P.S. Sorry for the awkward-ness of my pose. It looks like I’m about to pop a squat. I told Mom the picture was bad of me, but she kept disagreeing.

P.P.S. The cat in the background of both our pictures is Kristi. 🙂
